Dear supporters of AFC Cubo,
We thought it was about time that we gave the website a bit of an update.
Firstly, a massive thank you to Marcus Torr for his years of service as chairman (and as one of the more unpopular centre-halves in the Surrey circuit). A strong Old Boys presence at the successful fundraiser evening was excellent to see and Torr will be building on that in his new position as Old Boys Secretary (which will hopefully allow him more time to train Wilbur in the dark arts).
2023-2024 was somewhat of a disappointing season for the club, with the 1s finishing 8th in the Surrey Premier County Football League following a strong start to the season and impressive 2nd place in the 2022/23 season. The reserves (now endearingly known as the Cowboys) secured a bureaucratic promotion after finishing 7th, and achieved the same position in the Wimbledon and District League Premier Division, which was an overall solid showing in a significantly stronger league. A 9 match unbeaten run before Christmas and two good cup runs represent a sign of what the team can achieve.
In terms of honours, Oli Perkins picked up a well deserved Cuban of the Year award after he reaching and surpassing his 200th appearance for the club (you can see all appearances and goals since 2012 here). Our important connection with Bath University was rekindled this year, with nutmeg-sicko Julian Chetwynd and wannabe centre-forward Sam “Harry” Harrison picking up the 1s Player of the Season and New Cuban of the Year respectively. Veteran Steve Morish managed to keep his hamstrings healthy for most of the season and reaped the rewards with his Reserves Player of the Year trophy.
With a recruitment campaign in the offing under self-declared “Recruitment Director” Harrison’s watch (including a trial day on the 13th of July) , we are hoping to have a strong season both on and off the field (including a Cubo tour if Joe Virk and Ben Makepeace can finally pull themselves together). To stay up to date (including watching highlights from both teams), be sure to follow the club on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
Yours in baby blue,
Jonny Hall
